Interior Designer in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur

Bangsar isn’t just where I work — it’s where I live.

I walk these streets every day. I know which morning light floods into the upper floors of Telawi, how the afternoon heat settles differently in the bungalows along Bangsar Hill compared to the high-rises at Bangsar South, and why the best design decisions for this neighbourhood come from actually understanding how people live here.

My name is Minal Tejani. I’m a MIID-certified interior architect with over 15 years of experience, and Bangsar has been my home base for years. When clients come to me with a Bangsar property, I don’t need a map — I need their story about how they want to live in it.

I’ve designed residences in Sunway Palazzio, worked with brands like IKEA, Firmenich, Axiata, TNB, and Nair Dental on commercial projects, and built a practice grounded in one belief: great design starts with listening, and the best work happens when your designer genuinely knows the place.

Why I Love Designing in Bangsar

Bangsar has a personality that most KL neighbourhoods are still trying to find. It is established without being stale. There are decades-old trees shading quiet residential lanes just minutes from Telawi’s restaurant row. Heritage bungalows sit a short walk from glass-fronted condominiums. The neighbourhood holds onto its character while quietly evolving.

For a designer, this is exciting. Every project carries the question: how do you honour what makes Bangsar feel like Bangsar while creating a home that feels unmistakably yours?

The area’s walkability matters too. Bangsar residents tend to live more of their life on foot than most KL dwellers — walking to breakfast, strolling to the weekend market, heading out for dinner without ever sitting in traffic. That lifestyle shapes how I think about their interiors. Entryways need to work harder. Storage has to be smarter. Spaces should feel like a calm return from the energy outside.

And then there’s the proximity. Mid Valley is minutes away for sourcing. KL Sentral connects you to everywhere. Bangsar South has added an entire new dimension to the neighbourhood. The design possibilities here are as layered as the area itself.

Bangsar’s residential landscape spans several decades of development, and each property type brings different design opportunities.

Sunway Palazzio is one I know particularly well — I designed a residence there, blending modern comfort with the kind of refined elegance the development’s architecture calls for. You can see that project in my portfolio.

Ken Bangsar offers generous layouts with strong natural light and high ceilings, giving plenty of room for design that breathes. Nadi Bangsar, with its more compact units, rewards clever spatial planning and integrated storage solutions. Serai and Dedaun sit at the ultra-premium end, where bespoke detailing and material selection become the defining features of every room.

The Vertical remains one of Bangsar’s most popular mid-range developments, where thoughtful renovation can transform a standard layout into something that feels tailored.

Then there are the Bangsar Hill bungalows — older homes with solid bones, generous plots, and the kind of mature landscaping you simply cannot replicate in a new build. These properties often need careful restoration alongside modernisation, balancing heritage character with contemporary living standards.

Over in Bangsar South, developments like The Horizon and Nexus represent a different design brief altogether: newer builds, open floorplans, and owners who often want a clean, modern aesthetic from day one.

Each of these properties tells a different story. My job is to make sure the design tells yours.

Design Challenges Unique to Bangsar

Designing in Bangsar is not quite like designing anywhere else in KL. The neighbourhood’s mix of old and new creates specific challenges that benefit from local experience.

Heritage properties need a careful hand. Bangsar Hill bungalows often have structural elements — load-bearing walls, original timber detailing, established drainage systems — that must be understood before any renovation begins. Rushing into demolition without respecting what’s already there leads to costly mistakes.

Older condominiums require creative updates. Many of Bangsar’s established developments are 15 to 25 years old. Layouts that made sense in 2005 don’t always suit how families live today. Opening up kitchens, reconfiguring bathrooms, and upgrading electrical systems without gutting the entire unit calls for experienced planning.

Renovation logistics in established neighbourhoods take patience. Bangsar’s residential streets are narrow. Parking is limited. Condo management offices have strict rules about delivery hours, noise, and contractor access. Knowing these constraints upfront — and building them into the project schedule — prevents delays and frustrated neighbours.

Balancing modern taste with neighbourhood character is an ongoing conversation. Bangsar residents generally appreciate design that feels considered rather than flashy. Interiors here tend toward warmth, natural materials, and a sense of permanence. That restraint is part of what makes the neighbourhood’s homes feel so good to live in.

My Work in Bangsar

My most prominent Bangsar project is the residence I designed at Sunway Palazzio. The brief called for a modern classic aesthetic — clean lines and contemporary comfort grounded by timeless material choices and a palette that would age gracefully.

Working in Palazzio meant understanding the development’s generous proportions and ensuring the design felt considered at every scale, from the overall spatial flow down to hardware selections. The result is a home that feels both polished and genuinely liveable.

You can explore this project in detail on my Sunway Palazzio portfolio page.

Beyond residential work, Bangsar’s thriving food and beverage scene has also brought commercial projects my way. The neighbourhood’s density of cafes, restaurants, and retail spaces means there’s always someone reimagining a shopfront or fitting out a new venue on Telawi or along Jalan Maarof.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does interior design cost in Bangsar?

Interior design fees in Bangsar typically start from RM80 to RM150 per square foot for renovation, depending on scope and finishes. Design consultation fees vary by project complexity. Because Bangsar properties range from heritage bungalows to premium condos like Sunway Palazzio, budgets vary widely. The best starting point is a conversation about your space and what you want from it — I’m happy to meet locally to discuss.

Are there specific renovation rules for Bangsar condos?

Yes. Most Bangsar condominiums enforce strict renovation guidelines covering working hours (typically weekdays only, 9am to 5pm), material transport restrictions, noise limitations, and deposit requirements. Heritage and older buildings may have additional structural constraints. As a Bangsar-based designer, I’m familiar with the management requirements of developments across the area and factor these into every project timeline.

Can you design both old bungalows and new condos?

Absolutely. Bangsar’s charm is its mix of old and new, and I work across both. Heritage bungalows on Bangsar Hill call for a different approach than a unit in Nadi Bangsar or Ken Bangsar — respecting original character while making a home comfortable for how you live today. With 15 years of experience and MIID certification, I’m equipped to handle both the structural sensitivities of older properties and the clean-slate possibilities of new builds.

What’s it like working with a designer who’s based locally?

It makes everything easier. I can pop by your site without scheduling a half-day trip. I know the local contractors, the reliable suppliers, and the quirks of renovating in this neighbourhood. If there’s an issue on-site, I’m ten minutes away. And when we first meet, it can be as simple as coffee at one of Bangsar’s many cafes to talk about your project with no obligation.
