Interior Designer in TTDI (Taman Tun Dr Ismail)

TTDI is one of KL’s most quietly desirable neighbourhoods — and one I know well. Based just a short drive away in Bangsar, I’ve spent years admiring the wide tree-lined streets, the characterful 1970s semi-detached homes, and the genuinely walkable community that TTDI offers. It’s the kind of neighbourhood where design has to respect what’s already there.

Why TTDI Homes Need Thoughtful Design

Unlike newer developments in Cyberjaya or Bukit Jalil, TTDI’s residential stock has real character. The original Taman Tun Dr Ismail homes — mostly two-storey semi-Ds and terraces built in the 1970s and 80s — have generous plots, mature gardens, and a neighbourhood feel that’s increasingly rare in KL.

But they also come with design challenges that newer homes don’t have:

  • Older layouts that don’t suit modern living — small kitchens, compartmentalised rooms, narrow corridors
  • Structural considerations when opening up walls or adding extensions
  • Ageing plumbing and electrical systems that need updating alongside any renovation
  • Heritage character worth preserving — not everything needs a complete teardown

This is where an interior architect (not just a decorator or contractor) makes a difference. Understanding structure, spatial flow, and building systems means I can transform a 1970s layout into something that feels open, modern, and liveable — without losing the soul of the original home.

Landed Homes

TTDI’s heart is its landed residential streets — Jalan Tun Mohd Fuad, Jalan Datuk Sulaiman, and the surrounding roads. These semi-Ds and terraces are the most common renovation projects here, often involving:

  • Opening up ground floors for open-plan living
  • Modern kitchen extensions (especially the popular wet/dry kitchen split)
  • Converting upper floors for growing families
  • Adding a home office — increasingly important post-pandemic

Condos and Apartments

Newer condo developments in the broader TTDI area include options along the periphery near 1 Utama and Bandar Utama. These typically need:

  • Smart space planning for smaller units
  • Built-in storage solutions
  • Modern finishes that work within condo management rules

Commercial Spaces

TTDI’s commercial centre along Jalan Tun Mohd Fuad has a thriving cafe and restaurant scene. If you’re opening an F&B outlet in TTDI, restaurant and cafe interior design is another area I work in.

My Approach to TTDI Projects

Every TTDI project starts with understanding what you love about your home — and what isn’t working. For landed homes, that usually means a site visit where we walk through together, discussing how you use each space, what frustrates you about the current layout, and what you’ve always wanted.

Because TTDI homes often require structural changes, my background in interior architecture (not just interior design) is particularly relevant here. I assess structural feasibility before we start dreaming about finishes — so you know what’s possible before committing to a direction.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a renovation cost for a TTDI semi-D?

Renovations for TTDI’s typical two-storey semi-detached homes generally range from RM180,000 to RM500,000+, depending on the extent of structural changes, finish level, and scope. Older homes that need electrical and plumbing updates will be at the higher end. See my full cost guide for detailed breakdowns.

Do I need special permits to renovate a landed home in TTDI?

Yes — structural changes, extensions, and certain renovation work require local council (DBKL) approval. As part of my design process, I help navigate the permit requirements so nothing gets held up during construction.

Can you work with my existing contractor?

Absolutely. I offer both full design-and-build (where I manage the renovation end to end) and design-only services (where I provide the drawings and you work with your own contractor). Whichever suits your situation.

How far is Bangsar from TTDI?

About 10-15 minutes by car. Being based in Bangsar means site visits in TTDI are easy and frequent — I’m not commuting across the city to check on your project.
